"The label you give yourself cannot impact external forces that are not motivated by your own psychology or influenced by a third party's pre-existing consciousness of you. We are all presented with reasons to struggle which come from completely external forces; to pretend that one is not struggling is either arrogance or an admission of defeat. To admit that one is struggling is a sign and a source of strength." - Evan A. Baker

Poor Planning on My Part

I was so excited to see Casting Director Billy DaMota's discussion panel tonight. I'd been looking forward to it all week.  I gave myself 30 minutes to drive 6 miles and brought a notepad and books to while away the time I'd have before it started.

BUT, this being LA, I did not plan well enough. 30 minutes is not enough time to go 6 miles at 7pm on a Tuesday night. It wasn't even enough time to go THREE miles! I was amazed.

I think I was at Broadlawn and Ventura when I finally admitted defeat. I noticed Broadlawn went up into the mountains, so I figured, well, if I go up, I'll eventually be able to head East back home. And I did! I passed by the Universal City Overlook (Thanks for the picture, Travelin' Local!) and eventually made it all the way back to Laurel Canyon and got home safely.

Sorry I missed you, Billy. Hope you had fun.

  1. Hey! I attended the discussion tonight and it was very informative! He answered all of our questions (well, I didn't ask any but everyone else's questions were answered), and I learned a lot. He gave out a few websites to visit including donotpay.org, actors-network.com, and Department of Industrial Relations. I'm sure you've heard of these but since I'm fairly new to acting I was excited to get additional info. I'm sorry you didn't get a chance to make it, but he seemed like a really cool, chill guy who doesn't like reels (surprised us all), enjoys receiving phone calls, and genuinely likes actors. I'm sorry that this is so long, but I do really enjoy your blog. It's really inspiring!

  2. Hey Blaqbird, thanks for the info! I and my readers appreciate it!

Billy DaMota is GREAT! If you're not his FB friend, add him now with the note that you attended. He plays in a band regularly, and going to his shows can count as networking, meaning deductions come tax time!

Sorry. I just went and got my taxes done today. They're still on my brain. :)

  3. Hi Lira, I also went to his workshop yesterday! Sorry to hear you missed it; like Blaqbird said, he was very forthcoming and very informative. Oh, he also mentioned how it's not hard to Taft-Harley an actor, so we shouldn't feel bad for submitting even if we're non-union.

I think you might live in the Valley (since you mentioned Laurel Canyon) as do I. Anyway, why I bring this up? Well, I didn't feel like driving, since this is LA and Paul McCartney had a concert last night @ Hollywood Bowl. So, I took the Metro. It took me like 10mins from Hollywood and Highland stop to get to AADA, and my car was parked for free on NoHo Station. You could give it a shot next time ( :
