"The label you give yourself cannot impact external forces that are not motivated by your own psychology or influenced by a third party's pre-existing consciousness of you. We are all presented with reasons to struggle which come from completely external forces; to pretend that one is not struggling is either arrogance or an admission of defeat. To admit that one is struggling is a sign and a source of strength." - Evan A. Baker

Blowing Candles

That's me on my fifth birthday!
Last night, I was watching tv with the love of my life when his phone buzzes at midnight. I looked at him, "Who is calling  you this late?" I said. Who else is up this hour? Turns out it was his alarm. He turned it off and softly started singing, "Happy Birthday to you..." while nuzzling into my neck and hugging me.

I almost got a cavity, it was so sweet.

It's my birthday!!!!

How bout we recap the year?

Last year at this time, I was getting ready to go to Burning Man, an experience everyone should have. I wrote about Why I'm an Actress, got awesome commercial representation, had a bad horror film prove that I look way too young to have a 13 year old daughter, got bangs, got short hair, booked two different 22 year old characters, did a bikini runway hair show requiring fake tanning, booked two national commercials, found the most amazing acting coach EVER, submitted to theatrical reps, got nothing, submitted again, got nothing, submitted once more and signed and had the most amazing experience ever.

What did we learn? TO NEVER GIVE UP!

So, my darlings, I'd like to propose a game with you. Let's play:

HOW OLD Is The Struggling Actress?

Let's judge by pictures and the date I took them!

How old can I play, what do you think? How young is the youngest I can get away with, how old is the oldest I can get away with?

Cause, seriously, I need help with this.

I am celebrating today by rehearsing acting class scenes with my friend Jen and then learning my lines for the webseries episodes we're shooting tomorrow.

A nice way to celebrate, don't you think?

  1. Happy birthday friend! I won't guess your age and blow it for all the other contestants...I have, after all, spooned you, and therefore have intimate knowledge of all things Lira. :) Hope you have a good celebration.

  2. Happy birthday, Lira. Never having met you, but judging from the pix you've posted, I think you can play from 16 - 36, and you're somewhere in between. A good age for a solid actress!

  3. Lira, it is hard working strictly off photos. Plus, I know that they can do things with make-up, hair, and clothes to age you or make you appear younger. However, you only get so much leeway with those tools. I could see you playing someone just out of college. Or 21 (if you are among the working class) at the youngest. I can't see you playing anyone over 30. However, I think anyone in their 20s you are totally believable. I hope that helped!

Happy birthday however old you actually are:-)

  4. Hello from the other side of the world, Lira! Sounds like it is going to be a fun day and the new year is already promising to be fantastic.
I just went back to your post about the new headshots 'cause, you know, judging your age-range is serious business and needs to be approached professionally ^_^
Anyway, yes, you can totally play a high school student, lucky you - I mean look at the photo in which you smile because of your distracting jacket! I don't know about the upper end of your range being 36. But with some good make-up at least the early thirties are easily within your range. The rest is acting and that, well, that shouldn't be a problem.
Also, you're photographer friend is amazing and it is a crying shame that I live SO far away.
Even though I do live half a world away and the industry here is somewhere in between slightly to vastly different from L.A., I love reading about your ventures and adventures. You inspire me to always be my best, always work my hardest and to love every minute of my actor life. So, thank you, Lira and happy birthday!
    Warmest wishes,
    Anita

  6. Yep, I agree - end of college to 32. And that's going off your reels as well.

    Happy birthday!

  8. Hmm, it depends -- is this a "believable" age or like 90210/The O.C. age? If we're going believable, I agree with the others who said 21-35 (though you'd need a bit of 'aging' for the higher-end). If we're going 90210 then you could do 16 -- you don't look any older than those guys (read: girls) did way back when ;) And to your credit, I actually had to think about how old you looked (despite knowing precisely how old you are). :)

  9. First, Happy Birthday (LATE!)
Second, you could play ANY age in the 20 range...easy! Especially early 20s. EARLY 30's and that's about it. Lucky gal! I'm struggling to get those mid-30 roles still :(. Anyway, congrats on your success. I just got a show called Trailer Hits as a host, which is more my thang (vs. acting). I'm at http://tvhostguy.blogspot.com.
    Third, your blog rocks.

  10. Happy happy birthday, cutie :) You look college age in your first shot and very sophisticated in your second - so I'd say 21 to 30 :)

  11. Hey, I just found this on NZ National Radio. Belated birthday gift and hopefully a bit of inspiration.
