"The label you give yourself cannot impact external forces that are not motivated by your own psychology or influenced by a third party's pre-existing consciousness of you. We are all presented with reasons to struggle which come from completely external forces; to pretend that one is not struggling is either arrogance or an admission of defeat. To admit that one is struggling is a sign and a source of strength." - Evan A. Baker

Hair Envy

The grass is always greener on the other side, and this is a serious case of that.  I've got corkscrew curls.

Okay, really, I've got frizz that wants to be corkscrew curls. But you know what I really want? And there's no way to say this politely, so hopefully, I'm not offending anyone, but gosh darn it, everyone, in my next life,

I want to be a black girl.

Do you know what they can do with their hair?

EVERYTHING!!!!

They can braid it, straighten it, dread it, cornrow it, they can even shave their head! Seriously! You see a black woman with a shaved head and your first thought is, Wow. A real live African Queen! A woman who exudes so much sensuality and femininity and grace that she looks regal and stately with no hair!

If I shaved my head, everyone would think I was going through chemotherapy.

I am SO envious of big beautiful hair!

I LOVE afros!

I want an afro! But if I do an Afro,

I don't look fun loving, free spirited, fierce and adorable.
Oh no. I look goofy. I look like Gilly.

See?

So, I've decided. In my next life, I'm coming back as beautiful, adorable, sexy,
Brandi Ford!

Also,

Have you seen the muppet video for "I Love My Hair?"

Have you heard Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" song?

Then how bout this adorable mashup?

  1. THe grass is indeed greener. :D Every time I spend four to five hours re-twisting my hair to get those tight corkscrew curls, I wish that all it took was some product and gentle finger combing to get the same result. Le sigh.

  2. Adia - I once worked with a girl who twisted her hair so it looked like crinkle cut fries - I was SOO jealous! It was badass and fierce. You can't get badass and fierce with finger combing. :(

  4. Lira-Girl,

There's an entire documentary about the relationship that African American women have with their hair. As soon as I remember what it is, I am totally linking it for you.

In the meantime: your hair is awesome.

  5. Phoenix, do you mean Chris Rock's 'Good Hair'? Imdb link here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213585/

Lira, I love this post. I'm going to send a link to my American sister, Kate. Her and her husband have an Ethiopian daughter and another daughter and son on the way - literally, they're in Adis Abeba right now, picking them up. When they grow up and are having a 'bad hair day', I'm gonna make them read this post!

  6. I can partly relate as a fellow frizzy head. As a guy there is even less i can do with it other than weight it down with a good guido amount of gel. Or just let it fluff out.

As a kid I used to pray for straight hair. As an..older kid, I just pray that it behaves itself long enough.

  7. Hey Anita/Ophelia Thinks Hard!

The video to the "I love my hair" (not the willow smith muppet mashup) was just featured on the news over here! The guy who wrote the song is the head writer at Sesame Street - and his daughter is Ethiopian! He wrote the song for her! Isn't that sweet?

  8. LOL! Thanks for the shout out but Lira girl the grass is most definitely greener. Yes we can do all sorts of things with our hair that we love but sometimes we just wanna wake up and go and for most of us that's not possible. It takes time, time and more time. Seriously, a good quarter of our lives is spent in a black salon. So the next time you get to wake up, use a little gel and go, be grateful. :-)

  9. I can't tell you how many times you've been referred to as "the girl with the cool curly hair" when people are talking about my headshot portfolio. That's right...the COOL curly hair. You. xoxo :)
